SERGEANT'S NARROW ESCAPE,
A number of other strike cases wero called ion. William -Sellar Johnstone was sentenced to _ one month's imprisonment for having assaulted PoliceSergeant ©evr on- November 6. It was disclosed in the courso of evidence that Sellar hurled a piece of iron which just missed the sergeant's liertd, struck a pest, and fell at tlie officer's fcefc.
Royal Tiger Riot. The attack on the Royal Tiger Hotel was mentioned freely in charges in which Robert Hill was alleged to have taken part in a. riot, and with having assaulted Constable Lottgbottom while the latter was in the execution of his duty.
Constable' Lougboltom stated that there was a lot of stone throwing at the time, ajad that he was hit in the email of_ the back by a soda-water bottle. Hill was tl-ie.i arrested by Inspector Heudrcy.
Inspector Hendrey -deposed as to his arrest Hill.
Mr. E. J. Fitzgibboii appeared for Sill, who denied the allegations, and said that ho was not in sympathy with the strike.
Defendant was sentenced to fourteen tlays' imprisonment on tho assault charge, and was. remanded to the Supreme Court for sentence on the other CQlUit. Tha Tram Men, Albert Nowson niid John Pa toll, tramway employees, who aro alleged to have committed assault by driving a tramcar into a lino of mounted special constables, were remanded till nest Tuesday. Ak n important- witness for the prosecution could not attend. Bail (£80) was allowed.
Woman -Charged. Having taken part in an unlawful assembly on November 4 was alleged against Florence Nelson, a middle-aged woman. She was charged Also with haw ing wilfully broken a window and a lamp at the Koyal Tiger Hotel on the same, occasion. As accused has a number of children, Inspector Hendrey suggested that that should be considered when Vail was being fixed. Bail (£80) was allowed. insulting a Special, ■ Peter Muleahey was charged with drunkenness and with having tised insulting language to a special constable with the intention of committing a breach of the peace. The offences were alleged to have been committed on Tuesday. Muleahey offered no excuse. The Magistrate: Anything known of the defendant? Inspector Hendrev: He has been thirty-two times before the Court. The Magistrate: Defendant -Will be fined £5, in default one month's imprisonment. Riot and Other Charges. Remnmls were made till November 18 in the following eases :•*— Charles Johnson, charged with having taken part in a riot on, November 5 in Feat-hei'stone Street.
George 'Johnston, charged with having taken part in a riot lit .Fcathere'toiie St-rect on November a-.
William George Cookell, same as above. , .Alexander Churchman; same as above. Bail in all these cases was granted in't'ho sum of £80.
Frank Law, charged with havmg taken part hi an unlawful assembly in Tory Street;on November 7, was remanded till November 18,
Agnes TJdail was remanded till November 18 respecting a charge that she; took part in an unlawful assembly in Featlierstono Street on November 5. Man With a Bludgeon. ; It was alleged against Archibald ■ Campbell that on November 4 he took part in a riet in Ta ran aid Street, and further that lie was deemed to be a. rogue and a vagabond,. iii that lio Was found armed with a bludgeon, with felonious ink-nt,. On the. &vst charge lie was committed to tho Supremo Court for trial, and on the second charge lie was sentenced to two .months' imprison* mciit.
