In tile case Skipman versus Simmons, a claim for £2000 damages for alleged slander, plaintiff was granted a writ of capias against defendant, who was said to bo leaving shortly for Java. The slander complained of was contained in, tlio (words ;n ((This mis Ship- 1 man's Madame'NorcUoar, could' put him in gaol for misappropriating her money." Plaintiff alleged that defendant uttered these words aboard tho steamer Loongana to three others. It was also alleged that defendant had used the words: "Shipmah ias been robbing Madame Nordica right and left," at -tho Hotel Australia, Sydney, to anotlier person.
