CAUSE FOR THANKFULNESS.
(To -the Editor.) • Sir, —The determined attitude of the Citizens?' Defence Committee towards the lied Federation meets with the approval of the' majority' of the people, l'iie; arrogance of the hoisy coterie responsible for leading the workers into this'.strifc lias become intolerable. The Red. Federation has been looking for a ~ ..light, and has now got more than it . bargained for.' The firm Stand takeii by-the Government in maintaining law and.order; tho. grand spirit of citizenship thathas animated tho special con- . in putting up with hardship and inconvenience to assist the people to havo law and order; the uncomplaining devotion of tho womenfolk of the mounted specials from the country, are all / matters for thankfulness. Tho people of Wellington have also-causo for thankfulness that at this, critical moment Sir Joseph Ward is not Primo Minister, David M'Laren is not Mayor of the city, and that R. Fletcher, as cliair- ' man of the Harbour Board, is, at the moment, practically powerless. During tbo last strike, when the city was without its tram service, Sir Joseph Ward, who was then Prime Minister, inter- , vened and tho city got the worst of I the. agreement. Sir Joseph Ward's j, | speech in the Honse the other day gave 113 a very good indication of how ho would have acted had he any power and authority at tho present time. —I am, ftc., PONEKE.
