WELLINGTON'S EARLY APATHY.
(To tho Editor.)
Sir, —In your note at tho foot of my letter in to-day's issue of The Dominion you take mo to task for be'ing: "a littlo unjust" to the citizens of Wellington. I have no desire to be unjust to anyone, and if I have misrepresented their attitude of ten days ago in any way, I humbly apologise. My letter was written . Jive days before it appeared in print, and during that time events moved very rapidly. When it was written there appeared to, be 110 signs of real or united action on the part of the Wellington people to save their city from mob rule, and tho country "specials," whilst thoy wero getting plenty of abuse and hard knocks, appeared to be left to keep law and order and unlock the port unaided except for the assistance of tho regular police. lam very pleased to. acknowledge that since the date of writing my former letter, Wellington citizens liavo been much more active in tho defence of their own and the country's interests, and have shoivii >;their„ practical appreciation of tho farmers'prompt and ■invaluable help; though, whilst it took i only a few days for tho latter to rally (with their horses from all parts of tho country, and concentrate 'in Wellington, the former, at loast as it appeared from tho papers, seemed to take a fortnight'or so to wake up. However, if I have done anyone an injustice, I humbly beg his pardon, and hope I may be forgiven.—l am, otc., C J. MAYO. • Kimbolton, November 11.
