ARBITRATION COURT.
THE HAIRDRESSERS.
THE TERMS OF NEW AWARD,
At the Arbitration Court yesterday the award was filed ill the matter of tho Wellington Hairdressers' Assistants' Union dispute, the main provisions being as follow:—
Hours. —Tho hours of work shall bo 52 per week, exclusive of meals. Provision is made to enable, each employer to fix tho hours according to tho requirements of his business, but it- is stipulated that the day's work shall end not later than 6 p.m. on one day, not later than 8 p.m. on three other days, not later than 1 p.m. on tho afternoon of tho weekly half-holiday, at 9,15 on Saturdays, and at 10 p.m. on Christinas Eve and New Year's Eve. Meal hours shall bo arranged by the employer so that not less than one hour shall bft allowed. for dinner and one hour for tea.
Rate of pay. —The minimum wage for journeymen or journey women'is fixed at £2 15s. per week, the wages of those at present receiving more than that not to be reduced.
Holidays.—The following full holidays are provided, for: —New Year's Day, Good Friday, Sovereign's Birtfadayi Labour Day, Christmas Day, Anniversary Day, and Easter Monday, whilst tho second Wednesday in February is set apart ps the hairdressers' picnic day. Boxing Day is allotted from 10 a.m., and no deduction is to be made frotn the weekly wage in respect of any of these holidays. Apprentices.—An. apprentice is to receive not less than 103. weekly in his_ first year, 15s. in his second, 20s. in his third, 255. in his fourth, awl 3Ss. in his fifth. Tho proportion of apprentices employed shall be one for every three journeymen or fraction of three permanently employed, whilst no employer is allowed more than five apprentices. ,
Preference. —An employer is at liberty to eugage any person, whether such person is a member of the union or not, but the person so employed must become a member .of tho union within seven days after receiving from tho secretary of tho union ■' a written request to that effect.
Board and lodging.—lt shall not be permissible for an employer to provide hoard and lodging for any worker other than a member of his own family er a youth from an orphan lionre. Temporary employment.—An employee "who is permanently employed ill any saloon shall be permitted .to accept temporary employment in any other saloon on the afternoon or evening of his weekly half-holiday provided no other member of the union is unemployed and willing to accept the work offering. Casual workers.-—Casual labour shall be paid for at the rate of not. less than 12s. Gd. for long days and 10s.. for other days, except on the statutory half-holi-day, when the pay shall be ss. Scopo of award.—This award is to apply' only to employers carrying on business within a radios of twelve mites from tho Wellington Chief Post Office. Term of award.—The award comes into forco on November 17, and continues to August 5, 1015.
