MR. TREGEAR REBUKED.
HIS SLANDER ON THE SPECIALS. (Br Telerrarh.—Prees Association.) Dannovirke, November 11. The cudgels were taken up by the Danhevirke Chamber, of Commerce last evening in defending the special constables from these parts against the statement made in Wellington by Mr. E. Tregear, concerning "outcasts come from the country." It was pointed out that, as Mr. Tregear by reason of the various public positions held by him was a person of somo influence, and was also paid a largo State pension, it was not right that ho should be allowed to slander men who volunteered to protect their own property, and who had to assist in providing Mr. Tregear's pension. He l\ved upon Dannevirke. Tho "specials" were not "outcasts," but producers for the most part, and the whole of them were highly respeotable. A resolution was unanimously passed protesting against the insulting language applied to tho special constables by Mr. Tregear.
