THE TRAMWAYMEN.
SECRET BALLOT OPPOSED,
Tlie Wellington tramwaymen have posteonea the taking of a secret ballot on the question of striking or remaining at work. The position is reported to be that a militant section in tho Tramways Union, abetted by certain of the Federation leaders, has been agitating to have the motion to take a secret ballot rescinded in order that tho strike issue may bo determined by open vote. At the meeting oil Sunday last tho union only had before .it a telegraphed request from tho Strike Committee lo join forces with the strikers, It was decided to await a formal written communication. This, it is stated, has now been received. lit the meantime the Federation sympathisers in the union liAve been trying to get the sccret ballot motion rescinded. Instead of taking the ballot to-day tho' union is "fo hold, a meeting to-morrow, and : it is understood that the tramwaymen will bo addressed by Mr. R. Semple. ,
