NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Br Glencqi.]

Ihe Canterbury Jockey Club's Spring meeting will be continued at Riocartoii to-day. There are only three runners m the Canterbury Cup, but an interesting race between Midnight Sun, who is a, good stayer, and tho Derby winner, Cherubini, should take place.

The field for the Oaks will bo larger than usual, and a keen race seems certain. Warstep ran sttch a good second in tho Derby that alio will doubtless start favourite, but Banksia (W. Young) and lmmer {A. Oliver) can bo relied upon to make the Stewards' Handicap winner know she has been galloping. Ininier gave a very creditable showing :n the Champion Plate at Trontham, and Banksia ran second in the Trial Stakes, one mile and a half, at Randwick.

The Karamu stable has won both hurdle races .so far with Peary, and the samo stable has Witched engaged today. The Hastings horso Bravest is hardly ready, and the others • are not of much account.

There are a list, of new two-year-olds to bo introduced to-day. Hymettius is to have another race, and may run tnore true, while Rencontre wilt also bo improved by tho race 011 Monday. Tho Cljfford stable will start both First Flight and Merry Trick, and tho former has the reputation of being some good. She will be Deeley's mount.

Royal Arms, witli Oliver in tho saddle, will 110 doubt carry most support in tho big field engaged in the Avon Welter.

Autuinnus will no doubt bo given a raco in tho Jockey Club Handicap, as ho is a bit gross and the gallop 'will sharpen him up for the Stead Cup on Saturday. Ron Ton and Potoa arc new blood, but neither appears to bo ready. Tho latter is always a better horso for a raco.

Another big field will be sec-u out- in the Randolph Handicap, and tlio result appoars to bo hard for backers to anticipato. Ardent, the half-brother to Sanguinary, has a great reputation at Fordell, and Vocation ran a good race for six furlongs in the Ashley Handicap won by Sunbird.

Last year, Ceylon, ridden Sy S P.eid, won tho Otaio Plate. Tho AVairarapa horseman is to be on Lord Renown to-day. Many think . that, better handled, the chestnut would have won tho Metropolitan Handicap 011 Monday, Tho form shown by Martian's progeny has been quite a feature of the first two days' racing at Riccarton. Warstep and Lady Marcia were successful 011 Saturday, while Cherubim, Tamihauscr, and Sunbird added to tho winning rccord on Monday.
