TWO AWARDS.
PAINTERS & COAST ENGINEERS.
The Artritration Court, haying last Week considered the dispute brought by the Wellington Painters' and Decorators' Union, on Saturday filed the award, which is to the effect that the minimum wage is not to be less than Is, 4§d. per hour. Tho hours of work for all journeymen and apprentices employed at any branch of tho trade am to ho from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on five days of the week, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, between September 1 and April 30, one hour to oo allowed fav dinner (Saturdays excepted); and from May 1 to August 31 the hour's are to be from 8 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. eji five days, and from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, and half an hour is to be allowed for dinner (Saturdays excepted). Painters working on buildings where the majority of mon in other trades cease work at 1,1.45 p.m. on Saturdays. are to be allowed to commence work at 12.45 p.m. on tho previous Friday, to allow them to cease work at the same tamo. Overtime pay ia to vary from time and a-half to double time. Wages are to be.paid, on Fridays, except in the case of men working away froa the employer's place of business, in which eases they shall be paid on Saturdays. Apprentices are to be idonturod for fivo years, and the proportion of apprentices to journeymen employed is not to exceed one apprentice to every three journeymen or fraotion of three. Wages of apprentices are to range from 10s. a week (first year) to 30a. a week_ (fifth yoar). Provision is also made in tho award for the payment of travelling expenses under certain circumstances, for the employment of imdor-rato Workmen) and for an allowance to men and apprentices when engaged in country wdr«i Preference to unionists is granted. No employee is to sub-let work or give piece-work to a worker, and no journeymen working for an employer are to ac-> cept piece-work. The award is to come into force as from October '!, 1913, and expire on April 9, 1916. COASTAL FLEET. THE TEEMS' FOR ENGINEERS. The Court has ratified with one slight alteration the agreement entered into between the Wellington branch of the Marine Engineers' Institute and the owners of a number of the small coastal steamers. The test of the award is as follows:— Classification of Steamers. 1 Eighty to under 100 tons —Waimca, 86; Petone, 86; Opoiiri, 92. Sixty to under 80 tons.—Gertie, 64.3; Breeze, 64; Alexander, $7; Kairalci, 78; Ripple, 71; Putiki, 62.5. • Forty to under 60 tons..—Kennedy, 41; Nikau. 42; Himitaiigi, 46; Stormbird, 45; Kabu, 45; Kaitoa, 49.76; Squall, 44Arapawa, 60; Storm, 56.2; John, 46: Kapiti, 40. Twenty to under 40 tons.—Wakatu, 24.3; Huia, 24.3; Manaroa, 28; Ruru, 30; Blenheim, 30.76; Waverley, 26.7.; Mana, 24; Holmdale, 20.5; Wairati, 21;.Kapuni, 32; Hawora, 35; Queen of the South, 35; Moa, 35; Wootton, 25; Dofonder, 26; Mangapapa, BQ.7G; Tninui, 25; Kiripaka, 25. Undor twenty tons. —Opawa, 18; Aorero, 18. The n.h.p. of a Vessel ncit proyidei for nor any alterations' required in the above schedule iB to bo agreed upon between a representative appointed by the employer or employers concerned and a representative of the Australasian Institute of Marine Engineers (Wellington Branch). ' Rates of Pay. ,Clause 2.—The wages to he paid, to engineers per calendar month shall be: —Chief engineers: tinder 20 jj.h.p., £21; from 20 to under 4.0 n.h.p., £22; from 40 to under 60 n.h.p., £22 10s.; from 60 to under 80 n.h.p., £23 10a.; from 80 to 100 n.h.p;, £23 10s.; second engineers, £17 10s.; third engineers, £15 10s. The above scale does not pre* scribe the number of engineers to bo carried by any steamer. The nominal horse-ppwer is to be ascertained by dividing the sum of thesquares of the diametors .in inches of the steam-engine cylinders in the en-gine-room by 30. Pulaometers and accumulators shall not, however, be included in the computation of the nom* inal horße-power. > " Holidays. After twelve months' continuous service, engineers shall be entitled in each year to leave of absence for fourteen dayß on full sea pay (without victualling allowance), at such times as shall be agreed upon. At the option of the employer, the leave of absence may ho postponed in whole or in part, and the unused leave accumulated. so that it be not postponed beyond the third year. After _ twelve' months' continuous service, if an ehgineor resigns or is discharged for any cause ptiter than misconduct, ho shall receive payment in lieu of the holiday in proportion to tho time of service from his last holiday. Victualling. When retained in port, aid not found by the ship, onginebrs shall bis paid at the rate of 6s. per day. . While a steamer is out of commission ot laid tip for repairs, if the employers retain for fitting, or any other purpose, the services of an engineer Who Was the last of his rating borne on the articles in force for that steamer immediately prior to going out of commission,, or being laid up for repairs, the engineer shall be entitled for the time actually employed, but not exceeding a period of fourteen days, to full sea pay, and also (if not "found" by the ship) to victual-' allowance, and for any time thereaftei v(if still retained) the engineer (if chief or seoond) shall be entitled to full sea pay only, and (if under chief or second) shall be entitlod to not less than the . minimum shop rates for fitters' work of the same class in the port. Free transit will bo provided by the company's steamers for families and effects of engineers of the company. This only applies to engineers when they are removed to suit the Conditions of the special trade in which their steamers are engaged.
This award shall not apply to vessels plying within extended river limits. Tlie term of the award is to be threo years from April 1, 1913.
