DAItGAVILLE PUBLIC MEETING

Dargawille, November 8. A meeting whinh was convened by Mr. H. Hammond (Mayor of Dargaville), Mr. A. E. Harding- (president of the Kaipara Chamber of Commerce), Mr. Slado (chairman of the Hobsoii County Council), and Mr. Bnssctt (chairman of directors of tho North AVairoa Dairy Company), w'ds held m tho Assembly Hail hero this afternoon to consider tl.to propriety of sending special constables to the. assistance of the Auckland authorities, Mayor presided, and moved the principal resolution, viz.; — That this meeting of people of Northern Wairea deeply regret tlio industrial trouble, and with a view to assisting farmers and business people in carrying 011 the work oS tho country invites men to enrol themselves who are willing to go to Auckland, if wanted, to assist in the maintenance of law ' and order. It was reported that canvassers in the country had met with a ready response from men willing to go in any capacity wanted. The Mayor, however, thought spccial constables tho most necessary, and left it to the Farmers' Union to enrol free labourers if deemed necessary. Many came forward. The men are of admirable type — strong, wiry and good horsemen. There will bo no difficulty in sending a troop of two hundred of tho _ right stamp, if the necessity for their services arises, and at very short notice. An equal number of free labourers will ho available speedily if wanted to work the wharves. Mr. Downes, manager of the North Wairoa Company, was appointed secretary and Sir. Bainbridgc-, an old campaigner, is to bo in charge of the troop of specials.
