OBITUARY.
SIR WILLIAM PREECE, ENGINEER. By TeleßTaph—Press Association—OopxrieJit , London, November 6. The death is announced of Sir William Preece, the distinguished engineer. Sir William Henry Preece, K.C.8., F.R.S., LL.D., an ex-president of tho Institution of Civil Engineers, and Consulting Engineer to tho Colonies, was born m Wales in 183-1, and educated at King's College, London. Entering tho office of Mr. Edwin Clark, C.E., in 1852, ho was in the following, year appointed to the Electric and Mie International Telegraph Company; in 1856 he was appointed Superintendent of that company's southern district; he joined the London and South-Western Railway in 1860, was engineer to the Channel Islands Telegraph Company from 1858 to 18G7, was transferred to the Post Office aa divisional engineer in 1870,' was appointed electrician in 1877 and engineer-in-chief and electrician in He held the last* named position until 1809. Ho was joint author with. Mr. (now Sir James) Sivewright of a "Text Book of Telegraphy," with. Dr. Maier of "Tho Telephone,' and with Mr., Stubbs of a "Manual of Telephony." .
