NEWSPAPER LIBEL SUIT.
BRISBANE "MAIL" PROSECUTED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Reo. November 7, 9.50 p.m.) Brisbane, November 7. Messrs. Denham Brothers, produce merchants, and Mr. Digby Frank Denham, Premier of Queensland, aro suing the "Daily Mail" for £10,000, for an alleged libel. The subject matter complained of was headed: "Parasites Upon Society"—"Charge Against Producers' Agents"—"Alleged Fraudulent Dealings." The above.'purported to be a report of Mr. Bowman s speech in tie State Assembly. Plaintiffs allege that'the article meant that they had boen dishonest' in their dealings with the goods of a client, and had furnished him with fraudulent accounts. (Rec. November 8, 1.15 p.m.) Brisbane, November 7. The defence hi" tho case iB that the matter was published without actual ill-will, published • in good faith for the information of . the publio; that it was bona-fide; that it was intended, and was believed to be, a correct report of certain proceedings in'tl the State Assembly, but on accouut of the faulty acoustio properties of the Assembly Chamber, part of the speeoh was incorrectly heard and reported; that the defendants admitted that so far as the report purported to be a report 'of the speeoh, it was inaccurate, and that the earliest opportunity was taken to prevent the further sale and distribution of that issue of the paper; arid that the defendants unreservedly withdrew all imputations, and paid £100 into Court. ' ' The case is proceeding. '
