TAMMANY COMPLETELY ROUTED.
THE INFLUENCE OF WOMEN. By Telojrapli—Press Association—Oopyrij;M New York, November 6. Tammany's defeat was complete, the plurality vote of the Fusion for the Mayoralty candidate exceeding one huni dred thousand.. : The anti-Tammanyites won the State ■ Legislature, to which Mr. Sulzor has been returned. It is now thought probable that Sulzer will bo elected Cliairi man, thus taking a long step towards again becoming Governor. Press comment indicates scepticism as to Tammany being permanently defeated. pointing out how Tammany has been able to recover marvellously even' worse blows. Tho women, although voteless, are oredited with influencing the result largely. "Times"—Sydney 'Sun" Special Cables. (Rec. November 6, 6.50 p.m.) New York, November 5. * Mr. John P. Mitohel, tho newlvelected Mayor of New York City, is only thirty-four—the youngest Mayor the city has yet known. He is a grandson of John ; Mitchel, a famous Irish patriot. "John Purroy Mitchel, the ohoi'co of the Fusion foroes for Mayor of New York City, seems to be the leading man in- a new political drama," 6ays a writer in "Current Opinion," in a biographical note on the man who has just been elected. "Back of him, apparently, is the President of the United States, bent upon war with Tammany Hall. His choice a few weeks ago of Mitchel for collector of the port in New York City was a virtual declaration of war.' Tho choice of Mitchel as a candidate for Mayor was largely due to this expression of the President's confidence in him. The Mayoralty contest in . this city assumes, therefore, a national significance. It is not merely a contest between the Fusion forces and Tammany, but between the national Democratic administration and Tammany. It is a part of that 'war upon tho bosses' which Woodrow Wilson • began in Now Jersey and seeks now to extend to other Slates. Tammany Hall is in a poor condition to wage such a war at this time. It is not the Tammany Hall of fifteen or twenty years ago. Ever since New York became Greater New York, the Tammany 'tiger''has had to hustlo to find provender. _ A complete defeat in New York City in the coming municipal election would make the very existence of Tammany Hall as a political force precarious. John Purroy Mitchel has been selected to administer, the fatal blow. When Gaynor was elected Mayor four years ago, on the regular Democratic ticket. Mitchel became president of tho Board of Aldermen, and,- by virtue of his ofiioe, a member of the board of estimate, which is really the foverning board of New York City. When [ayor Gaynor was shot' in August, 1910, Mitchel became acting-Mayor. The vigour with which ho proceeded to clean up Coney Island is still remembered with shudders in the 'tenderloin district.' He found the mail full.of complaints and, I in the time-honoured way, a6ked for the police_ commissioner to investigate. The commissioner did so, and reported Coney Islandjn excellent condition. But J.litchel then and there departed from the timehonoured way. Ho put a number of investigators of his own at work, sending them ill pairs to Coney Island. After geting their reports, Mitchel got busy. The inspector of police in ehnrge of Coney Island was reduced to ' a captaincy, and in a few days tho 'crooks' and confidence men, and other undesirables, of Coney Island formed a spectacular procession, headed by a brass band, and amid the jeer 3 and cheers of tens of thousands of spectators, marched along tho principal highway to the railway station and departed for other fields of activity. Even Gaynor's return to offioo didn't save the Police Commissioner Baker. He , was forced to resign not long after."
