KEEPING THE KING'S PEACE.
PRECAUTIONS ADOPTED. A BASELESS RUMOUR. (By. Telegraph.—Press . Association.) ~ Christchurch, November 5. At a meeting of tho Lyttelton Harbour Board to-day some resolutions, passed at an informal meeting held on November 3, wero confirmed. These resolutions included tho nomination of about fifty persons as special constables, tho wanting of tho right to erect barriers on tho wharves should they bo considered liccessary, tlio appointment of the harbourmaster as wharfinger, and lastly, a notification to the Stevedores' Union that tho chairman of the Harbour Board was authorised to take charge of tho Coronation Hall should it bo considered necessary.
Rumours are in circulation locally that Territorials, and especially mounted men, are to bo used in the event of trouble arising. It is understood that there is 110 ■ foundation for the statement. On the contrary, it is alleged that officers commanding units have received instructions to inform tlio men undor their command that if they volunteer as special constables they must do so as civilians, and not as Territorials. . Just recently tlio arms ilnd ammunition on issue to members of the Coast Defence Force in Lyttelton were called in. The arms were recalled in the ordinary way for inspection by the armourer.
