Hudson and Co., manufacturing confectioners, will have to close their works on Friday evening owing to the _ warehouse being full of Christmas goods mado to order that cannot bo shipped to tho North Island and elsowlioro, and tho want of. sugar. Messrs. Irvine and Stevenson's works. are also about to shut. Friday afternoon is the time fixed on for closing the sates. This means tho throwing out of 80 hands. Messrs. Heid and Gray's agricultural implement factory resumed work this morning with a full staff after being idlo . for two days. The men in tho employment of Messrs. Shacklock also turned to this morning. It is uncertain how long' tho works will be ablo to run as everything depends upon the supply of material and tho dispatch of ordered goods. If tho blockade is not soon raised theso ironworkers will probably bo idle again shortly. Messrs. A. 'and T. Burt liave no present intention of closing down as tho bulk of their work in hand is for contracts. A little inconvenienco is being felt in tho brass moulding department owing to -.tlie inability to get goods away, but the 'management hopes to bo able to keep the works open. The Mosgjel Woollen Mills aro still running full time and tho Eoslyn Woollen Mills aro also going as usual. Messrs. • Speight and Co., brewers, deny a rumour that thoir firm intends closing down. All hands remain at work except a few who aro on holidays on full- pay. Inquiry from an official sourco Tesults in the assurance that tho Dunodin Tramways Union havo not, up to to-day, considered tho question of coming out, nor havo thoy been asked to do so. Tlicy aro not taking any action in reference to ■tho strike to-night. Nearly all tho men employed by tho Otago Harbour Board on various works and services (numbering oyer 100) were paid off. Tho only, work that will bo continued is tho Lcith canal which has to bo mado safe..
