NOT RAILWAYMEN.

LOT OP SOME CASUALS. Recently the member for Otalci (Mr. J. Robertson) addressed the following question in tho House of Representatives to tho Minister of Railways:— "Whether he will make provision this year for placing tho railway dining-car mon and the employees of tho Government timber mills on the permanent staff; and whether ho will review the servico conditions of these men with a view to bringing about a muchneeded improvement." , Tho Hon. W. H. Herries (Minister of Railways) replied:—This matter has engaged considerable, attention on my part, but at tho present moment there ate many objections to tho adoption of the suggestion to place dining-car 111011 and sawmill employees on the permanent staff. Tho conditions under which these men work aro entirely different to those appertaining to ordinary railway work, and require to bo provided for accordingly. I hope to go further into the matter shortly, and will then advise you tho final decision come to.
