POSITION IN THE CITIES.

IN AUCKLAND. THE CALL ON THE TRAM MEN. (By ToicgTajli.' -Press Association.) Auckland, November 4. All has been quiet in Auckland today. Until the. last day or two no workers could have been more apathetic towards the strike than the tramway hands. Their refusal to be drawn into tho threatened trouble last y<sar with tlio general labourers, their coolness towards the AVaihi st-rike, their ultimate complete separation from the Federation of Labour all marked down tfio tramway men as a body of workers who stood alone. Tho outcome; therefore, of . a meeting of tramway . men this morning will cemo as a surprise. Tho meeting was ono of "p.m." shift men. Tltoro was a full attendance of .all available members. Tho trouble was' exhaustively, discussed, and, ultimately, a, commiitco of six was deputed to. wait on tho Strike Committee, to 'ascertain how best tho tramway men could help tlio waterside workers in their fight. • This committeo met the Strike Committoo shortly alter midday, aiid discussed the position in all its bearings. Tho Strike Committee recommended that tlio tramway men cease work tho moment tho first spccial constables came on the. waterfront, or tlio first freo labourer. . , ~ ' •This recommendation will bo placed before a meeting of , tlio Tramway Union, which is to bo held to-night in tho Trades Hall. Tho day-shift men will attend'to-night's meeting, and tho afternoon shift men will meet again tomorrow morning to consider the recommendation. Tho future action of tho union will depend upon tho joint voting Ol tlio two meetings, which it is necessary to have in order to cover tho whole of tlio members:

Tho gravity of tho position in respect of tho recommendation which the tramway men are to discuss-is intensified by the fact that it is understood that tho 600 special constables, now assembled in Hamilton, wero to-day summoned to proceed to Auckland.
