ARAHUBA PUTS BACK.
DAMAGE TO CRANE. SHAFT. An unexpected l arrival, and the only otto ftt Wellington yesterday, was tho Union Company's West Coast packet Arahura., which returned to port owing to' a serious fracture -in the starboard! crank shaft. The vessel left Wellington oil Saturday last for Nelson and West Coast ports, but only got as far as . Nelson when the 'trouble was discovered. This shaft had not been working satisfactorily, and timely examination by the,, engineers .averted damage- to the engines. When the nature of "the trouble was reported, it was deemed ina'dvisabla to proceed to the . West Const, and it was decided to return 'to Wellington, The voyage to Wellington was completed under the port engine alone. Passenger and baggage, for the coast were transhipped to tho Anchor Company's steamer feitaa. Several of. the passengers, however, completed their jouMioy overland'. , The fractured shaft is to be replaced by a spare one which is earned on the vessel, and the work of effecting repairs will probably be completed at the end of the week.- Tho vessel took np an anchorage "in the stream yesterday afternoon./
