TRAM STRIKE RUMOUR.

AUTHORITIES SCEPTICAL. Rumours were current on Saturday to tho effect' that there was some likelihood of tho tramway men of Wellington going out on strike, for what particular purpose it did not appear to bo quite clear. From inquiries mad© among the men thero is not liknly to be any trouble in that direction, fot tho simple reason that they do not seo clearly what object they would bo serving in holding up tho tramway service at tho present jvneture. Regarding the alleged action of the men in refusing to allow special constables to travel on the cars, it is known that hundreds of special men are travelling hourly on the cars, and liono have been' treated discourteously by tramway conductors. Tho ohairman of the Tramways Board (Mr. W. H. Morton) said tho board had no official information in regard to the strike rumour, and did not believe it. The relations between the board and tlio men wero never better, and lie personally had complete trust 111 the loyalty of the staff to tho council and tlhn public. He felt sure that the men would continue to show that courtesy ' and consideration to the travelling public which had .beon characteristic with them in tho past. The Mayor (Mr. Luke) also expressed similar opinions.
