LAWN TENNIS.
THORNDON CLUB OPENING. The Thorndon Tennis Club's season was opened on Saturday, when there was a largo attendance of members and friends oil the courts at Halswell Street! Mr. R. M. Simpson, who is president of the club'and one of its founders, took part in the play during, the afternoon, as did Mr. L. G. Mac- 1 kay,' vice-president:- Mr., R. N. K. Swanston (New Zealand champion), Mr. P. White-Parsons, Mr. E. Salmond, and several other well-known local players. The four courts were in capital order, and were fully occupied until 6 p.m. Afternoon tea was dispensed by a ladies' committee (Miss M. Seed and Miss E. Gray), assisted by others. Applicants for membership are more numerous than vacancies, and a ballot will therefore be necessary. The secretary (Mr. A. L. Berry) has posted tho names of applicants in the pavilion at tho courts, and tho ballot will tako place at tho ond of the present week.
BROGHAM HILL CLUB. Play in connection with the Brougham Hill Tennis Club's handicaps v/as commenced on Saturday afternoon, when somo of the contests resulted in close finishes. The games decided wero as follow:— . Men's Singles. Staples (18 on) defeated GirlingButchor (owes 16), 50—31. Men's Doubles. Girling-Buteher and Reeves (owe 2) dofoated Staples and Williams (IS on), 51-49. Ilurloy and H. Sim (10 on) defeated Emery and M. P. Sim (20 on), 50—47. Kolman and Quinncll (10 on) defeated Veon and Rout (8 on), 50—44. Ji A. B. Howo and H. B. Howe (owo 6) defeated Bennett and Thompson (26 on), 50 —'14.
