NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By Glencoe.l - Beragoon, winner of both Australian Derbies, is in the Melbourne Cup (run on Tuesday) with 7st. 61b. He will probably start a warm favourite. The winner of the A.J'.C. Derby gonerally goes on and completes tho business by scoring at Flemington. In recent years Abundance, Sylyanite, Poisedon, and Prince Footo hayo each won at both plaices. Multiplicity,' half-sister to Fort William, and Caher Davon, half-brother to Multiply, wero purchased last month for 1000 guineas, the buyer being K. S. Williams. Both these horses are under orders for the Christchurch Meeting. Weights for the Marlborough Meeting are due on Saturday noxt. On Wednesday next there is a final payment of 10 sovs.. for the New Zealand Cup, and a similar amount for the Stewards' Handicap. Wednesday is acceptance day for tha C.J.C. oponing day s (handicaps. Elfbolt (Birkenhead—Elflock) was sold recently in Sydney for 90 guineas. B. Deeley, who has been riding at Riccarton, returned to Auckland by Saturday's train. It was his intention originally to rido at Ellerslio on Monday, but owing to the unsettled state of affairs,, he will probably return South this evening. In view of tho impression' among many sportsmen that both Sea Prince and Anna Carlovna wero at tho weights "paper cortainties" for the Caulfield Cup, it is stated (says the Melbourne "Ago"), that originally Mr. F. Mert-on did not intend 1 to start Aurifer in t'ho event. Ho was, however, offered ■ some inducoment ;n the sharpe of remunerative odds—to win dOOOsovs. —about tho son of Flavus for tho race, with what result is already well known. It was bad luck for tho Connolly stable that Aurifer should liavo taken tho trip, as had he been out of tho way, Anna Carlovna would havo landed the stako, for which she had been backed by her owner to win a fortune. Midnight Sun has landed at Riccarton in good condition. Ho claimed no engagements at the Mclbourno Cup Mooting, and that fact was no doubt partly responsible for the horse being sent back to Now Zealand. Midnight Sun won tho last Now Zealand Cup under Bst., and subsequently ran third to Bohrikoff and La Reina with Bst. 111b. in tho Auckland Cup. He now meets the last-named on 81b. better terms.
W. H. M'Laohlnn, who was to havo ridden Duke Footo in the Melbourne Cup, will now bo on lierngoon. M'l.aoblan, Inwover, will ride the Derby winner 31b. overweight, which will bring his woicftt up to 7st-. 91b., which was what lie rode at after imir-li sweating in the Caulfield Clip. Tliii- may nut have helped Anna Carlovnas' chanco in the race. . J. H. Pressor will probably leavo by the Maori to-morrow for Lyttelton. His toam will oonsist of Gipsy Bolle, l'avlova, and Dofireut.
The V.R.O. Meeting will be continued to-morrow, When the Melbourne Cup will bo decided. Now that tho strike is virtually oyor tlioro will be a rush of horses for Riccarton, and from now up till Thursday evening tho ferry boats will bo taxed to their utmost capacity. Both boats, when fitted with extras, aro capable of taking thirty-two horses, so that there will be no danger of any Cup candidates being crowded out. Tho Canterbury Jockey Club's executive will bo very pleased at the ending of the trouble and tho New Zealand Cup meeting, which promised to bo a very fiat affair! may yet result satisfactorily. If, as is anticipated, the waterside workers' troublo is over, the following trainers and' their charges will leave for the south to-night:—S. Waddell, H. Cutts, T. Quinlivan, J. Munn, V. Colelto, J. George, R. Gooseman, A. Attwood, F. Higgot, H. Kingan, J. Lowe, and C. Pritcliard. Carlita, who acted as runner-up in the Mnribyniong Plate on Saturday, is a New Zealand-bred youngster, by Charlemagne II from Conronne.. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. "Wager" (Alfredton).—A. Reed rode Lady Moutoa in the Hawko's Bay Cup at Hastings last season.
