' TRAINING AT RICCARTON. . , (By Telegiraph.—Special Correspondent.) Chrlstchurch, November 1. '. Once again : tho weather conditions were almost perfect for training operations, and a lair number of horses were indulged ia ' fast work. Usually the Saturday previous to the commencement of the New Zealand Cup meeting is the busiest of the year, but, owing to the absence of the, largo number of North Island horses, matters wero comparatively quiet this morning. Most of the work dono was • accomplished on ■the plough, . but as these tracks had been well watered overnight, tho going lyas by no means fast. Several horses registered good gallops, and, taken altogether, the work was interesting. • Query (R. W. King) and (T. Musson) opened proceedings by running half a milo in 49 4-ssec. • Stardancer (Musson) and Wanstead (King) wore companions in a mile and a quarter gallop, which occupied 2min. 12 3-ssec. • . Warstep finished ahead of Stardancer, and as she had all the worst of the weights, her gallop must be reckoned a particularly good one. Martius (lightweight) also put up a good gallop in getting to the end of a mile and a quarter in 2min. Usee.,'and as the going was not particularly fast, this also was. a nice performance. . Chrysotia' ran six furlongs in lmin. 19 3-ssec., aind Quarantine, assisted by Glencannich over tho last mile, covered a similar journey in 2min. 16 2-osec. Though the timo registered was .'not above the average, tho black colt was not fully extended, and could have improved on the time considerably. ■. Waitarh defeated' Martial over half a mile in 61 4-ssec., and M'adama and Flower of the Wost covered seven furlongs in lmin. 36isec., while Tangus occupied lmin. 3 4-ssec. while running . five furlongs—a satisfactory gallop. . May.Dalrymple was going very pleasingly after running sis furlongs in lmin. 17, l-ssec., while Flora Macdonald was given useful work, and, Bold Stroke and Merry Trick went five furlongs in lmin. 9sec.
Joan, who had tho worst of tho weights, finished several lengths ahead of Mumura,' after running a mile in lmin, 46 4-osec., while Jcannot and Salzburg''took lmin. 45sec. to run a similar distance. '.This was a nice gallop, as both horses finished well. \ Bleriot and Merry Roe. both looking well, rattled over six furlongs- in lmin. 16sec. , Both fillies were carrying lightweights, but, nevertheless, they finished full of running, and their displav pleased the spectators. Brown Owl ran aeven furlongs in lmin. 37sec., and Midnight Sun-was not extended. Martell (F. E., Jones) ran a mile and a half at a good strong pace, and Ovar ran five furlongs in lmin. fisec. Banksia covered seven furlongs in lmin. 33sec., tho last six furlongs occupying lmin. 19 3-ssec., while Winning Way finished in front of Birkful, after running three-quarters of a milo in lmin. 18$ sec. Stevedore and Briar Patch sprinted five furlongs in lmin. 4sec v and Clierubini, Lady Marcia, and Historiette finished in that order, after running a mile in lmin. -47sec. • , Peg (F. E. Jones) and Ogier (R. Berry) ran six furlongs in lmin. 18scc., while Whizz defeated First Glanco over six furlongs in lmin. 18 2-ssec. Chorale, G'nomo, and Snowraker were not fully extended whilo running a mile in lmin.- 51sec., while Mere was going; better than Counsel at the end of five furlongs, run in, lmin. 5 4-ssec. Crib covered six furlongs in lmin. 17iseo., whilo La Reina was going better than Emperador after running a milo in lmin. 44sec. Both the Cup candidates; .carried light-weights, and, though at ono stago of tho gallop Emperadof stumbled rather badly, La Reina was going much tho better at the finish, ( and, to nil appearances, could have finished ahead of her companion. Huiiakaha was ■ given' a schooling task over several flights of hurdles, and First Flight got to tho end of five furlongs in lmin. 2sec. —a very smart gallop. Sir Malt, Atheldonne, Girt, Malt, ,Giraldakoff, Tuniso, and Silver Shield 'wero'given easy work, whilo Cortes defeated Charmilla over half a milo in 525 cc. .; •- Teviotdale ran five furlongs in lmin. 5 2-ssec., while Oxenhopo and Thuringa got to the end of half a milo in oO 2-5 see., and Orton accomplished a six-fur-longs gallop iu lmin. lOiscc. . Mcwbrav (F. Thompson), under a string pull, ran a milo and a half in 2min. 60sec., and Honesty spurted throe furjongs very nicoly in 3850 c., while Overton took 56seo. to run half a mile. During" the breakfast interval ths plough was harrowed, and, in consequ'enco, those horses working lato wero favoured with a faster track. Tannliauser (J. Collier) defeated Thrax (Norrio) by three-quarters of a length, over a milo run in lmin. 44 2-ssec. Thrax was on tho outside throughout, and, as ho had much tho worst of the weights, his performance was a very satisfactory ono.
Nithsdalo and Kihneny wero companions in a gallop over a milo, which occupied'lmin. 46 4-ssec., and Masterpiece defeated Downstroko over a similar journey in lmin. 45sec. Fire God was going better than Signoralo after sprinting threo furlongs in 38sec., and Ada Mcrling finished iu front of Politician, arter running six furlong 3in lmin. ISsec., whilo Vanquished did usual work. Kilts spurted half a mile in 50 l-ssec., and Moonglow rattled over five furlongs in lmin. 2 4-ssec.
Golden Morn and Sveaborg left Bix furlongs behind in lmin. 17 4-oseo. Hops and the Glenapp filly ran half a mile iu 51 3-ssec.. Combination (W. Bush) was sent once round over tho hurdles, and Veritas spurted four furlongs ill 50jsec., while Tho Cornet and Sentry ran five furlongs in lmin. 3 4-ssec. Ladi'ono (G.
