The steamer Kaitoa arrived from Greymouth this morning with coal, but it was found, on arrival, that there wove not sufficient men to work her, and so operations had to bo confined to one hatch. Tho secretary of the Watersidors' Union explains that the reason for the shortage was tlmt mere men than usual were wanted for /work in tho sheds. Another reason is that several men are temporarily engaged in 'other occupations in town. Tho steamer Alexander is duo hero to-morrow with ooal -for. tho railways. Tho Blackball steamer Ngatoro is discharging he? coal at Castlecliff, where work is going on satisfactorily. It was rumoured hero that several horses which were engaged at the Now Zealand Cup meeting, and were held up at Wellington, were to bo railed hero and shipped to Lyttelton. Inquiries show, however, that this was without foundation. C&nsidering that regular customers havo the first call on them, cattle boats will continuo to Bhip only regular lines of stock for the south.
