THE POLICE DEFENDED
MELEE IN THE SQUARE. '. Two p'rominont Auckland residents who wore eye-witnesses of the encounter between tho mounted police and the strikers in Post Office Square on Thui'S' day evening gave the following account of tho affair: — ' "We were amongst tho crowd by the railway lines, when our intention was directed to a man on a bieycio calling out, 'Scab policemen aro roniing, bc?B, and there was an immediate rush of tho public, amongst which wo v.ero, to the side of the road, and obtained, a fair view of practically everything that occurred.
On tho arrival of the mounted constables there was considerable hbotinc and demonstration, folio wad by a fusilade of metal, bombs, etc. Our first impression, on hearing' the detonators, was that firearms were being used. It was very difficult to judge whether that was so or not at the time, as tho crowd was closing in rapidly, and it was difficult to judge the nature of tho reports. However, as the troops were moving at a very slow -pace we were enabled to approach sufficiently close to seo tho reports were caused by detonator bombs A$ this particular period iho crowd was fn an ugly mood, pressing closely on tho troopers. The demonstration wai of a decidedly hostile nature, with a continued fusilade. of metal (which was of a very dangerous nature) raining fast on tho troopers. "In our opinion tho charge of police which resulted was more than justified, as it was quite apparent that Had this charge not been made the unruly section of the crowd would have got boyowl control, and tho troopers ivould liavo been in imminent personal danger."
