PAYING HANDS OFF.
EFFECT ON DUNEDIN WORKERS. (By Td«irrarli.—Prcea A*soclittion.) Dunedin, October 3i. The offcot of the strike on local workers threatens to be serious. Already some _ manufacturers find stocks accur inulating, and they must cease worfi till an outlet for goods is again provided. To-night Messrs. Hudson and Co. dispensed with 30 employees in i! 'the biscuit department. Work in the confectionery department is still going on, but,'if the strike is unsettled by the end of nest Week, the whole 200 will be put off and the factory closed down. Speight and Co., brewers, are unable to got liquor away or empty oasks returned, so they have given 100 hands a' weeks notice. Only a few employees will be retained for repairing and casual work. Messrß. Shacklock's foundry will he dosed to-morrowi The fitters employed by the firm will resume on Monday, but the moulders will be idle tilMVodnesday. Tho flour mills are seriously affected. The average weekly export of flour, bran, and pollard is about 1000 Sacks, and, as the outlet-is completely blocked, the staffs will have to be reduced very shortly. Tho employees of Messrs. Spencer and Dunkloy, carters, numbering over '30, held a meeting to-night, and subsequently informed tho directors that under no circumstances would they strike or leave their employment. The supplies of sugar are getting short, and the Master Grocers' Union has decided to ask retailers' pot to sell moro than I2lb. to any one family at 2}d. per lb.
