THE DAILY STRIKE WAR CRY
IN POST OFFICE SQUARE. Yesterday was the quietest day in the Square since the strike commenced. The crowd assembled was muoh smaller than it has been for some days, . and there was a slump in the number of orators who mounted the cart. One of the first speakers was a Mr. M'Lennan, who was prominent in Walhi during'the strike. He deprecated the recent talk about tho employment ,of free labour on tho wharves. -If the employers were able to get free labour they would' have got it days ago. The people of tho country had been greatly surprised to see the solidarity of the wharf labourers. They never expected it. If the workers only knew the conditions which reigned in Waihi since the miners were defeated, they would fight ■the_ present trouble with every drop- of their blood. Mr. Bailey, who acts as chairman to the Square meetings, urged "the strikers to "keep their eyes and ears about them for possible trouble." He also appealed to them to keep out of the pubIjchouses, and to remain perfectly sober. They should also avoid rioting and quarrelling _ amongst themselves. If the waterside workers saw a" "shickor" on the Btreots—whether he was a member of tho union or not—they, should take charge of him, and lead him away, so that he could' not occasion trouble. Mr. H. Holland complimented „the strikers on their behaviour during the previous twenty-four hours. After tho provocation whioh they had received, he would not havo been surprised! if tho streets of Wellington had been bathed in blood. The Bpeaker' then went on to indicate his opinion of bluejackotß. Several othor speeches in a similar strain were delivered during the aftornoon, but there was a marked diminution in the number of orators, as compared with previous days.
