THE TURF.

RICCARTON FORM. (From Our Bwjolal OorrtairaJHlent.) Chrlstchurch, October 81. Although tho weather conditions at Riccttrton this morning left little to be desired there was no work of any consequence accomplished. Midnight Sun, who arrived yesterday, is looking really well, and should strip particularly will in the New Zealand Cup. Rinaldo, who has been laid aside with an attack of strangles, was also on the course, and the little colt looks little the worse for his enforced idleness. La Reina is in very nice condition, but Las not rot been extended, and Bleriot and Merry Roe are also looking well. A large number of horses wero indulged in useful work.

MELDOURNE CUP. WEEK.

FALLING OFF, IN RAILWAY TRAFFIC. Sydney, October 81. Though thousands of Sydnoyites are visiting Melbourne for the Cup Meeting, the railways report that the traffic is not equal to that of Oup tiffio in 1912; also that fewer people have, come from tho country, Queensland and overseas. The reason is not. known; probably the smallpox is- partly responsible.

' NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[By Giencob.] The V.R.O, meeting opens at Flemington to-day. The principal events are the V.R.O. Darby, the Maribyrong Plate (five furlongs, for two-year-olds) and the Melbourno Stakes .(one mileand a quarter). The lasWamed event generally throws. Borne light on the chances for the Melbourne Clip, which event is to be run on Tuesday. Trainers who are detained hero by the strike are keeping their charges up to the mark, and yesterday morning a very interesting gallop took place at Trentham between several of the New Zealand Cup candidates. Undecided, Sea Pink, and Expect finished in ■ that order, with Bronze and Haskayne beaten off. ' ' There is some montion of members of the Waterside Workers' Union presenting a memorial to the Strike Committee asking them to take another vote as to whether the horses should be allowed to go south. It is believed that, if this is done, there will be a large majority in favour of permitting the shipment. ,' Lqs Angeles, in charge qf H. Telford, i was railed to Ellerslie by the Main ; Trunk express yesterday. The chestnut gelding will run in the City Handicap on Wednesday, and will be ridden by A. Oliver. Local operators report that business is at a complete, standstill over the New Zealand Cup and the double. This is, of course, in consequence of the uncertainty caused'by the strike.. At the C.J.C. mooting the hurdle fields, in particular, will suffer if no' more mounts are able to go Bouth. Only eleven horses' wero nominated for the Spring Hurdles, and, of this number, no fewer than, eight are still in the North Island. Mr. J. B. Reid has cancelled his idea of sending OharmiUa and Ogier to the Auckland meeting. The filly was to take part in the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes and the colt in the .Great Northern Guineas. J. M'Combo has been engaged to rida Oxonhope in the Stewards' Handicap, and may also ride Flora Macdonald iii the Oaks at the C.J.C, meeting. Mr. G. If. Proctor, secretary of the Nuth' Otago Jockey Club, acted aB stipendiary steward at the • Greyinouth Spring meeting. Martins is regarded as an unlikely starter in the Stewards' Handicap at the C.J.C. meeting. My Lawyer and Obsono have eaoh incurred a 31b. penalty for the Stewards' Handicap at the Christchurch meeting. In Melbourne some! of the critics hold the view that Andelosia will reverse the Randwiek positions with Boragoon in the V.R.C. Derby, which is to be run to-day. The big colt's running at Caulneld 1 suggested that either his opponents were inferior or that ho had come on a lot, while Beragoon -is j thought to have been at his best in I the A.J.C. Derby, and his subsequent efforts in the Craven Plate saw him start on the down grade. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. "Whist" (Pahiatua); The candidate mentioned was scratched at 9 a.m. on October 18—the day following the acceptances.
