THE PLIGHT OF DUNEDIN.
STEAMER MAITAI LAID UP. (By Telegraph.—Prose Association.) Dunstlin, October 30. To-day local shipping peoplo began to feel the pinch of tiro strike in Wellington seriously. There ijcro ominous growls to 11 bo heard in various offices over the non-arrival of cargo and general dislocation of engagements. In a number of instances tho opinion was expressed that something- should bo dono to put an end to the domination of the many by a mere handful of professional agitators. At the present juncture there appears to be a solid voto in favour of making a'clean sweep and arrive at some finality in tlio matter. Some indication of tho Union Company's stand ill the present dispute is afforded by the fact that it- decided yesterday to withdraw the Maiisii from the Aueklanrl-Dunedin running. Tho crew will bo paid off to-morrow, and the steamer will be laid up at Tort Chalmers for an indefinite period. The only steamer scheduled to "ieavo this port for Auckland within tho next week is" the Huddart-Parkoß.Comoaay's Vie-
toria, due to sail on Tuesday. It .is quite possihlo. however, that tho Victoria may bo hold up before that dato.
