APPEAL TO SPORTSMEN.

| TO ENROT, AS SPECIALS. An emergency meeting of the executive of tlia Wellington Amateur Sports Federation was 1 eld yesterday morniup ja *.PMPoaal tint mombert.of.

the various sports clubs should bo. enrolled for sorvico in tho special police force. Mr. U. St. J. 13eere, who was appointed chairman, said that ho understood tho Mayor of Wellington (Mr. J. P. Luke) had approached several sports bodies, with a view to ascertaining what they could do in tho matter, The speaker thought that it would be better if the federation took action as a body, instead of leaving tho various clubs to act singly. Ho asked the meeting to consider whether or not it should respond to the appeal. Mr. W. Perry said that the objectof tho federation was to preserve the' interests of sport. Such a matter as this hardly came within its sphere. The general opinion of tho meeting was- that tho matter was one for individual action, and that it was not the place of tho federation to make a move. _ Mr. E. 0. Hales said' that tho federation could not bind the individual clubs, to which the Mayor had appealed. The clubs should bo left to themselves to take such action as they thought lit. Tho chairman admitted that the federation could not bind tho clubs, but by issuing a circular, it could suggest a certain line of action. Mr. Hales asked what would happen if a circular were issued, and it were found that half the strikers were foot* . bailers. The chairman: We don't want men who object to ooma and torol. It was eventually reßolved that no action could bo taken, as the matter was outside the jurisdiction of the federation.
