Mrs. Jackson Palmer, wife of tho Chief Judge of the Native Land Court, is to leave on a visit to India on November 7. Mrs, Palmer will ho tho guest of' her brothor, who is o tea-planter in Assam. Mr. R. H. Henderson, of Johannesburg, is a visitor to Wellington. It is his intention to visit tho Hot Lakes district. Mr.'H. Sliftkel, of London, is a visitor to Wellington. _ Ho intends to visit tli© Hot Lakes district, and will do some trout, fishing, there. Tho Dev. H. Worsley Thomson,, who was forbidden by the doctor to leave England on the ovo of his departure to tako tip his duties as assistant curate at tho St. Paul's Church nearly two years ago, has made a splendid recovery, and aftor eight months 1 servico in .Western Australia arrived by the Ulimaroa on Wednesday last to fill tho ! vacancy at St, Mark's Church caused by tho preferment of tho Rev. L. H, Fenn to the parochial district of Pahiatua. Before leaving Albany, the Rev. Worsley Thomson was tho recipient of a purse of gold. Mr. AY. St. ClairWhite, in making tho presentation, spoke in the highest praise of Mr. Thomson, whom they were all sorry to lose from their midst, and added that tho Albany parish's loss wouid bo New Zealand's great gain. Mr. Thomson had become a great favourite with all classes in the district, and tho good work he had started in the King River, Kalgan River, St. Oswald's, and Robinson Estate districts he (tho speaker) _ was pleased: to say was to be continued. Ho wished Mr. Thomson every happiness in New Zealand. Several other speakers also spoke in similar kindly terms, and added that his place would bo very hard to fill. Messrs. R. P. Grcvillo, H. L, Primrose, and S. T. ■ Scddon, of the Lands and Survey Department, were farewelled yesterday afternoon by officers of the "Department, and all received presentations. Mr. Grevillo has been appointed inspecting surveyor at' Hamilton, and Mr. Seadon-goes to do field work at Nelson. Mr. Primrose has resigned from the Department to take an appointment with <v private firm at Napier. A Press Association message from Taihapo states that _ a .representative and numerous gathering of citizens was he loir in the Town Hall on Wednesday night, when Mr. Anthony Nathan was entertained and presented with a service of plato in recognition of 'his seven years' occupancy of tho Mayoral cha*ir. The utmost enthusiasm prevailed, and eloquent tributes woro paid tho services of Mv. Nathan, and also those of Mrs. Nathan. Tho Mayor (Mr. M'Lcnnati) presided. Mr. John Rowo, Mayor of Gnehunga, is making a satisfactory recovery from bin recent severe illness.
The Professorial Board of tho Auckland University Collego lies selected Mr. W M. Jones, of Papakitro, as ttio Auckland nominee for tbxs Rhodes Scholarsliip. Mr. Jonas is 20 years of ago, and lias obtained 'botli senior scholarships in mathematics, and has never been less than first-class in the examinations. He lias won a largo number of collego premiums, and represented Auckland provitiso at hockey, Ho is a keen towns player.—Press As* eooiation. Mr, A, L. Berry, Otago delegate to tho Now Zealand Lawn Toiiiiis Association was (at tlio annual meeting of tlio association last evening) presented with a framed photograph of tho English lawn tennis team'in recognition of his services in arranging tho Davis Cup match in Wellington, and supervising arrangements in connection with the visit. Sir. Berry replied in a short speech during tlio courso of which ho remarked that lie would like to seo more enthusiasm shown in the sport which they represented. The Rov. Walter Stanley Bean, Chaplain, Second Glhbs, Now Zealand Chaplains' Department, has been decorated with tho Colonial Auxiliary Forces Officers' Medal, ho having a total commissioned sefyico to September 14, 1918, of twenty-one years and six days. Tho appointment of Mr. Jesße Steer to bo a member of the GrOymout'h Harbour Board, in place of the . Into Hon. A. R, Guinness, is gazetted. Mr. T. F. Booth, who has boon clerk to the Mount ltoskill Ikad Board for about fifteen years, has decided, on account of failing health, to relinquish the position. His resignation ' was received at Tuesday night's meeting of the btiUrd, and after reference liaa been made to his faithful work, it waa accepted with regret, and Mr. Booth wbb ■ granted three months' leave of absence on full pay. Mr. James Wilson, Town. Clerk, of Devonpori, was on Tuesday night presented by the Mayor and Councillors of Devonpqrt with a solid Bilver teapot (bearing an appropriate inscription) to mark the occasion of his approaching marriage, Tho opportunity was_ taken to express very keen appreciation of tlio admirable services which Mr. Wilpoii. _ had rendered to tlif borough in his official capacity.
