BANK CLERKS & MARRIAGE.
A HULK DENOUNCED. The practice followed by some banks of prohibiting tho marriage of their clerks until they have attained an income of £200 was the subject of ii question addressed to tho Prime Minister by Mr. 11. S. Ell in the House of Representatives yesterday. In asking-, what steps the Prime Minister .proposed to take in reference to this. rule, Mr. Ell pointed out that the West Australian Parliament has approved u clause ill a, Bill providing that any person prohibiting, ui-idor threat of dismissal, tho mai> rying. of any employe!? over twenty-one years of ago shall bo liable to a fine of £.500, or three months' imprisonment. Sir. Massey replied that it was not deemed necessary at present to interfere with the manner in which tlm different banks regulated tho employment of their clerks. Mr. Ell said that the rule was "in force in four of tho banks operating in this country. There had been cases where trustworthy officers had been kept down until they Were' close bn forty years of age, thereby being denied the chance of marrying. He urged that legislation should bo introduced prohibiting any bank making a rule depriving a man of the right to marry at a reasonable age. Mr. Eil expressed a hope that the Prime Minister would take tho matter up ifi his capacity af Minister of Labour,
