SUBSIDISED STEAMERS.
THE SAN FRANCISCO SERVICE. Questioned by Mr. Buxton in the House of Representatives yesterday on die subject of the subsidised steam services, between Now Zealand and America, tlio Prime Minister njade the tollowing statement;.— _ . . (1) The position' in regard to tae Vancouver' service is that it JJ' 1 " pire about November, 1916. The contract for tho San Francisco service expired on October 20, 1913. (2) The Union Steamship Company was asked for information as to tho terms upon which it was prepared to continue too service on a fifteen-knot basis beyond tie period for wliich the contract just expired was made. Tho company submitted alternative proposals, which are now under tho consideration of tho Government. (3) It is understood that practically tho w'holo of the refrigerated space "has been booked up t<3 dato mentioned, Irafe that very little, if any business las been refused because ot this. There is reason to believe that the contractors would provide an actional freight steamer if sufficient cargo wero offering. W The Government cannot give an estimate of the- freight receipts. •
