EDUCATION BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Wellington Education Board, held last evening, was attended bv Messrs. It. Leo (in the chair), .T. G. W. 'Aitken, W. H. Field, J. KcbbeH, A. W. Hogg, T. Moss, J. Freeman, and Sir Walter Buchanan. Tho board's financial statement showed that on September 26 .there was a debit balance of ".£1559 6s. 5d., and on October 21 <£721 Is. 7d. Tho total authorisation (including sites, etc., authorised in addition to September 30) was .£2236 6s. sd. Receipts Since last meeting totalled .£9522 lis., and supplementary payments '.£127 13s. lOd. Tho board approved of the statement. . Notifications from the Education Department were to the effect that the Government would give a grant of CO for tho purchase of an acre of land for tho Training College at Kelbnrne, and .£390 for additions to the Tokomnm School. In future, Inspector Stuckey would' be recognised as Instructor' in Agriculture. ' . ' Tho inspectors were asked to report on the question of increasing the accommodation at Brooklyn. ■ A report came to hand from Inspector Charters on the application of tho Castlepoint School for capitation. Tho inspector Tecommended that tho school, which had ten pupils, should bo taken over, providing tho Marine Department would allow the school to be carried on in its buildin"'. Tho residents therefore asked for a school. Members expressed tho opinion that so many children—there are about 40 of them—should not -be suflerinir undfcr tho injustice of bavin" no facilities for education, cut the difficulty was that there was no assurance that Mangaroa would be a permanent settlement, and that there would Always bo enough children to justify the existence of a school. , A proposal by tho Auckland Board that a conference bo held in Auckland in January neat was coldly received, and it was decided to Teply that the board had no objection to the conference. Members wero of the opinion that the conference might be of value, but ■it was thought that southern members would not attend a conference so far away from home. Regarding complaints of overcrowding at Maranui School, the Chief Inspector (Mr. T. R. Fleming) reported that additional accommodation was required, but it was'.now too near, the Aew lear to make any arrangements for temporary accommodation. As Maranrn was likely to becomo a large school, the inspectors Tecommended'that application bo made for a grant for additional accommodation. and that a beginning be made with an infant department, separate from tho main school. The recommendation was adopted'.
