THE EPIDEMIC.
POSITION SATISFACTORY IN THE NORTH. (By Telegraph— Press Association.) Auckland, October 28. The extinction of the epidemic in the Auckland province was stated by the Oliief Health 'Officer this evening to be practically assured. It is announced that the restrictions on the movements of Natives a-.re now to- be relaxed in certain districts, tat Maoris will not be allowed to come into the city without restraint. No cases have occurred in the country districts during the past fortnight. Only six patients are now Tinder, treatment in the Point Chevalier Hospital. Ono was discharged to-day, and the others will bo released within a week. AYith the exception of ono case, a "contact" who was •under continual observation, no new cases have been found in the city and suburbs •since October 13. Dr. Valiutine stated that aii' unbroken period of two weeks might be confidently accepted as evidence that the disease had been stamped out, although ho would not be surprised if a few more cases were reported.. Ho was now certain that the disease was thoroughly under control, and that there was no risk of it again assuming an epidemic form. Dr. Valintiue added that until the Commonwealth authorities removed their quarantine restrictions, passengc-rs leaving New Zealand for Australia would bo required to submit to the precautions at present in orieration.
