MR. J. A. PANTON, MAGISTRATE. By Telejra.pl)—Press Association—OopjTieht Melbourne, October 26: The death is recorded of Mr. Joseph Anderson Panton, F.R.G.S., ex-semor Police Magistrate at Melbourne, ■ aged eighty-two years. , . Mr. Panton retired in 1907 from tho Victorian Publio Service as first Metropolitan Polico Magistrate, after having been 33 years on tho Metropolitan Bench. He was born at Knockemil, Aberdeenshire, and educated at the Scottish Naval and Military Academy and Edinburgh University. In 1852 he was app6inted Commissioner of Crown Lands and AssistantCommissioner of' Goldfields at Bendigo. < He explored and occupied laTge tracts of pastoral country in Albert district New South Wales, and Kimberley, Western Australia# and was one of the first to direct public attention to tho gold resources of Western Australia. Mr. Panton took a very active part in Melbourne artistic circles, and in geological and geographical study. Upon his retirement from the Bench, after more than half a century in the Public Service, the late Mr. J. L. Pnrves, K.C.,.then leader of the Victorian Bar, remarked: "Mr. Panton is recognised as oue of those' Empire builders who have left their mark on the history of this State." SIR WALTER MENZIES, M.P.
