HAURAKI LANDS.
« :— AND THE NEW LEGISLATION. Much has bcon made by Oppositionists in tho House of Representatives of the injury which they say will bo dono to the mining' industry in the Coromandel Peninsula by tho granting of the freehold to tenants of Hauraki pastoral licenses. As the .Primo Minister has frequently pointed out, tho | Bill finds favour in the district. This statement is supported by a letter which Mr. Massey has received from Mr. R. W. Bagnall, of Thames. Following is tho pertinent cxtract from tho letter: "As.chairman of a conference which was held here some few years ago between the Thames Borough and tho Thames County Councils when this subject was discussed, I desire to thank you for what has been dono for tho district against great opposition. I feel suro tho change in tho law will bo tho means of a considerable area being taken up and put to profit-able iiso. At all events tho othor conditions have had a fair ' trial, and havo not led to much being dono in the way of settling thoso lands; so that it is high time a change was mado. The Hauraki Prospecting and Mining_ Association are unanimous in tho opinion that better tenuro was required, while in every way safeguarding tho right to prospect! and mine for gold, or other minerals. ' I am chairman of this association. Therefore, I desire to thank yon for tho good work that has been dono in this connection, and feol assured that tho result will fully justify your action. 1 "
