GENERAL FARMING NEWS.
Tho indications at present point to tlioro being an abundanco of hay in tho Masterton district this season. Tho recent rains havo resulted in a marvellous growth in pastures. It is stated -that tho opening prices for fat stock in tho Masterton district ■ this season will bo 18s. for wethers, 15s. 6d. for ewes, and 15s. for lambs of first quality. Tho bookings for space on the show grounds at Carterton aro reported to bo heavier than last year, and this part of the thirty-sixth annual exhibition will tax tho available spaco to tho utmost; however, tho secretary and his assistant do not believe in refusing applications; and regarding both implements and side shows count "tho moro tho merrier." Notwithstanding tho advent of tho motor-car and motor-cycle, the horso entries, for next week's Carterton Show are better than they have been during tho wholo life of the society, with tho exception of tho record year of 1910. . In tno Hat. hacks there is an entry of no fewer than 26, in ]3st. and lady's hacks entries of 16, and in all other classes corresponding good entries. The entries in the jumping competitions on tho second day aro also good, 13 horses competing in each event. The milk supply at the Kaitawa cheese factory on Friday totalled 1150 gallons, an increase of 170 gallons on the supply delivered on tho correspond- ' ing day of last year. Tho payments for_ September's milk supply totalled £252 Bs., being an advauco of lljd. per lb. 'of butter-fat. This is £100 in ex- ; cesst of the amount paid out for the same month's supply last year. ,A consignment of 60 crates was railed from Pahiatua yesterday for shipment to the Old' Country. The supply at the Papatawa cheese J factory (Woodville) has now reached ; 1000 gallons daily, from which 12 ex- t port cheeses aro made. Tho company 1 expects its supply to reach 1200 gallons i at the height of tho season. lor tho i month of Septembor it took' 9.901b. ' of milk to make lib. of cheese, and lib. ' butter-fat produced 2.851b. cheeso. Tho , company is sending forward 60 crates . for shipment per s.s. Athenic, sailing on < October 30. The following .consignment ' will comprise 80 crates, which will bo ] shipped by the Rimutaka early in Nov- ( ember..''Tho suppliers express them- 1 Belvos' highly satisfied with the ;cooperative system. j There is every reason to believe (says 1 the "Southland Times") that if tho j season continues for a few weeks longer i to be as favourable as if has been since 1 the beginning of September, Southland c will have a record year for production. \ During tho past few weeks the grass j has como away at a phenomenal speed. < Teed is everywhere becoming plentiful, ? and even the stock; which fared none too well in the winter, aro rapidly com- t incj into condition. The intakes at the ' dairy factories aro increasing daily, and | the oqtput of cheese is expected largely , to exceed tho figures for past seasons, n It is_ not too much to hope that the " lambing will bo the best that Southland ( has yet had. The outlook is in the F highest degree encouraging, and since i remunerative prices are assured, the F largo increase in production means • an I enormous return to tho producers. r Eggs in Victoria, British Columbia, sell at 45 cents a dozen just now, and a private letter states that they aro '. never less than 35 cents, (about three J shillings) a dozen; while tney often go r very much higher. i , Develop the milking propensity and 0 high butter-fat test by using the "Gil- 1 ruth" Calf Food. The constitution- 6 builder. It is not only tho best, but also 4 tho cheapest.—Advt. 6 1 , i
