RETURN OF MISS CALDOW.

CONCERT IN THE TOWN HALL.

TruJy delightful . was the concert given in the Town Sail last night by Miss Minn, Caldow, the Wellington contralto, who has just returned from England', where she undertook a five Tears' course of study. Miss Caldow has a rich, true contralto voice, and her singing is delightful. The audience was rather small, but it gave her a reception which must have been entirely satisfactory. Every effort of the singer was greeted with the most ©flthusiustio applause, and generally an encore number had to be conceded. Miss Caldow had the assistance of Mr. Christian Hellemaim (organist), Mr. Charles H. Clarkson (baritone), Mr. Edward B. Gilchrist (violinist), and Mr. Prank S. Amsden (pianist). Miss Caldow'b openr ing numbers were "Der Wanderer' (Schubert), "Avanera'.' (Carmen), and "The Rosary" (Nevin). In these her success was immediate, hor versatility and scope obvious. Of the three items "The Rosary" probably appealed most to-the audience. It was sung by special' request, audi was one of her most delightful selections. As an encore song she sang "Home, Sweet Home," a charming evergreen, treated with exquisite feeling. Carev b "Nearer My God to Thee" and Gounod's "Ave Maria" closed the first part of the programme'. The "Ave" was an encore number, and, with violin obbligato and organ accompaniment, it was exquisite- In, the second half of the programme, "Until" (Sanderson) and "Tho Little Damozel" (Ivor Novello) wore sung first, _ Both are brief and dainty, and additional links in a chain of success. The old, old "Mnggio, the Oows are in tho Clover, was charmingly sung as an encore. Marshall's lovely little three-verse I Hear You Calling Me," tnid Oliver's "The First of June," were tho filial numbers on the programme. Again, particularly in the former, the singer s rich contralto was used with wonderful effect, and her response to a rousing eneoro was d'Hordelot's "Bwiauso. Mr. HeUemasm played "Occasional Overture" (Handel), "Cradle (Salmon), and "Prelude to Parsifal (Wagner). Mr. Clarkson's songs wore "Invietus" (Pnnio Huhn), "Rolling Down to Rio" (Edward Gorman), and, for an encore, "Fallen Roses." Mr. Gilchrist played "Ave Maria" (Schubert), and "Souvenir" (Drdla), and as Si? fjiftoro number "Tho Brokaft Molodj."
