NOTES AND COMMENTS.
THE WELLINCTON RACING CLUB'S , MEETINC. POINTS OF INTEREST. [Br Glencojb.] Racing premises to be full of interest at, the Wellington Racing Club's Meeting, which opens at- Trentham today. At time of writing th« weather is uncertain, though some sportsmen may find satisfaction l in reading the official forecast, which contains such interesting information as the following: "Cool and changeable generally. Squally at times in Foveaux Strait." Certainly it ■is something to bo thankful for that the races are not to ho run in Foveaux Strait, and that at Trent'ham, wha'o they are to be held, there will not be sweltering heat. Passengers may take train for tho racecourse with, that knowledge. Special railway arrangements have, as usual, been made, and trains will leave To Aro for tho course at 10.23 a.m. and 10.43 a.m. From Lambton Station the times of departure will be 10.18 a.m., 10.40 a.m., 11 a.m., 11.9 a.m., and 12.6 p.m. Proceedings will open with the Rimutaka Handicap, in which the Maniapoto gelding Toa Teio is top of the list. He has a great reputation, and will probably start favourite, though Master Lupin, on whom A. Oliver is to have the mount, is sure to have a big following. Ladoga, who is credited with having dono a satisfactory trial, and Pavlova, a consistent plp.ce-getter, may command most support of the others. Master'Webb has good form to recommend him in tho Hack Steeplechase, but the fact that he jumps " too big" is against him. Addnought is a useful jumper, Hiiritangi stays on well, and Kingsway has undoubted pace, but not ono of the horses named could be considered in the same class as Bollin, who is at the head of the handicap, and who will start ono of tho strongest favourites of the day. . Bootlo, who has not been performing well enough to warrant his being kept in tho Karamu stable much longer, will carry most money in the Spring Selling Plate. Ho seems to have all the best of tho "special weights," but on account of good form shown at Otaki, Glenlivet will not be wanting in support. <ti Los Angolos, who will carry No. 1 oloth in the Wellington Handicap, may bo in want of ft race, but on. tlifi otlior hand Eniperador has had a capital preparation, and his form in the Spring Stakes at Randwick recently was good. Next on the list como Mira and Cheddar, but tho former has been showing signs of lameness, and the latter seems backward. Poroneal is a good performer in the soft going, but there aro several otherß to whom tho same remark can be applied. Favouritism will probably rest with Kilrain, who . has been doing great work on tho track throughout the week. The probable starters and ridors in tho event are as follow: —Los Angolos, 9st. 21b. (A. Oliver).; Eniperador, Bst. 111b. (F. E. Jones); Mira, Bst. 81b. (W. liyan); Cheddar, Bst. 61b. (L. Wilson); Peroneal, Bst. 41b. (M. M'Donfild); Byron, Bst. 21b. (B. Deeley); Expect, Bst. 21b. (W. Young); Passadena, 7st. 121b. (R, Berry); Kilrain, 7st. 12'lb. (W Price); Imagination,' 7st. 71b. (H. Lowe); Lady Moutoa, 7st. 71b. (J. O'Shea); Ariom, 7st. 71b. (.T. Buchanan); Ngatiraunui, 7st. 71b. (L. Noddor); Lord Renown, 7st. 41b. (A. Roid); 31b. (A. Hunt): Ceylon, '7st. 31b. ( ); Tho Hague, 7st. 121b. (W. Bell); Semaphore, Gst. 71b. ( ). Tho Wellcsley Stakes, for two-year-olds, will present some difficulties to backers. Castalia is certainly the most experienced candidate in the art of winning. Chime also has winning form to recommend her, but Martian Princess has boon doiug the best track work at the sceno of battlo. Football was beaten at Hastings, but ho finished in capital style, and will command some respect on that account. The probable starters and riders in tho race are:— Pariform, Bst. 71b. (A. Oliver); Roumania, Bst. 71b. (T. Pritchard); Redlight, Bst. 71b. (M. M'Donald); Refutation, Bst. 71b. (W. Young); Hymettius, Bst. Tib. (W. Ryan); Football, Bst. 71b. (L, Wilson); Chime, Bst. 21b. (J. O'Shea); Martian Princess, Bst-. 21b. (W. Price); Gargaron, Bst. 21b. (W. Bell); Castalia, Bst. 21b. (J. Buchanan); Charmilla, Bst.' 21b. (F. E. Jones): Honosty, Bst. 21b. (11. Berry).
In tho Shorts Handicap, tho draw for places will bo a bioj factor in the final result. This has always been tho case at Trentham, over since tho startingpost was altored. A win in this ovent moans a penalty for any horse who may afterwards have to race iu tho Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton. Several of tho candidates claim - engagements in tho Riccarton event, and it is reasonable to suppose that many of them may not ■ wish to incur a penalty. Horses have been proved over and over again to have a distinct aversion for penalties. All things considored then, tho Shorts Handicap appears to bo a very open race. Three New Zealand . Cup candidates occupy tho top places in tho Wainui Handicap. They aro Bon Revo, La Hoina, and Ha,skayno, and another prominent Cup candidate, Sea Pink, appears lower down tho list. These four horses will probably carry tho bulk of tho monoy on tho machine if they all go to tho post. Secret Link's form at Otaki and Masterton will probably result in her being sent out favourite for the Final Scurry, but again tho draw for places will mean a great deal. Day Fly, tho Karamu representative, has a reputation for pace, and another candidate well spoken of is Adroit. B. Deeley's mounts at Trentham today will bo Toa Tero, Princess Flo, Byron, Patronalo, and Adroit. A. Oliver has engagements for six races, his mounts being Master Lupin, Los Angelos, Ermengardo, Awahou, Pariform, and Secret Link. ■ H. Telford will bo seated on Pavlova, Gipsy Belle, Dearest, and Aratiatia. W. Ryan is engaged in all the flat races, the horses to bo piloted by him being Anguish, Bootio, Mira, Atlcar, Haskayno, Hymettius, and Day Fly. Tho well-known lightweight, R. Berry, will, it is understood, rido Ladoga, Passadona, and Mount Victoria in their engagements. Marton did not start in tho hurdle raco run at the City Tattcrsnll's meeting at Randwick last Saturday. He and Whakaweira were withdrawn on the previous day.
The weather was gloriously fine, and tho Riccarton tracks in first-class order for training operations yesterday morning, says our Cliristchmch correspondent* but as nearly all the horses in training; had been given fast work on Thursday, there was little of importance done. Tho work this morning is oxpcctod to bo full of interest, and fast galloping is expected. Nominations for the Marlborough leaning Club's Spring Meeting close on Monday next.
