Tariff Bill passed in tto Senate yesterday, and, according to all accounts, it ia likely to become low in it-3 present sliapo witnin t.ho next fortnight-, but it appears that raw wool wili not be freo from duty till December 1, and manufactured woollen goods till January 1 next. However, it ia an immense relief to tho trade to know that the thine is -sottled at last- It will take some time beforo th© mills in America can settle down in. fuc-e of buoli a great change. In fact, it is more than likely that some of thorn will ehut down until they eee how '».ngs arc goins tp shape. They say they cannot compete with other oountrie? if they pay their hands the present rate of wages, and if they reduce wage 6 tho band* wili in all probability eome out on strike. . They aro evidently between tho "devil and the deep sea." However, what may be their loss may provo to be a big benefit to Yorkshire, inasmuch as she may get some large orders for piece Eoods. Sooner or later the wool market must gain by tho changes but what 1 we are all anxious to know at the moment is, will that benelit come this year? If a iargo quantity of wool was kept back till November, and it then turned out that- free wool was not to bepeiit the market, to the extent expected, it is to bo feared that a drop might take place, andi everybody would want- to clear stocks out then, which would aggravate matters. There is a lot of wool held in Bradford. as well as In London, waiting for tho boom in- America, but suppose it doesn't- como off? However, wo do not take an alarmist vitSw of the' matter, although what we have mentioned is just a possibility. It is a great pity that- tho coming into forcc of this new tariff on wool is deferred till December 1, as it will probably prevent any large American orders coming In for the September auctions. It is. however, too soon to fay for certain. There ia plenty of time for American buyers to como over before tho sales open. "What is wanted to make the market, Imm is an "American buy" or 15,000 to 20,000 bales, but this is very improbablo.
