I UNRULY ONES HELD IN CHECK. All day yesterday and up to a late hour last evening the Strike Comtaittee were busy. Meetings were held frequently, and the secretary's room was besieged by men, who apparently wished to know what was doing in the way of news. There were five gangs of pickets at various points on the wharves, and the men forming them were always on the alert. Nobody escaped their eye, and people were approached in a quiet manner, and asked their business. If a man happened to look like a worker,' and endeavoured to pass unnoticed, he was immediately pounced upon by the over-watchful picket, and the men's position explained to him. No unnecessary interference was indulged in by the pickets. . Evory four hours the pickets were relieved, and other willing ers" eagerly took up.the work. A noticeable feature during tho whole of yesterday were tho endeavours of members of the striko committee to quieten the men when any trouble looked imminent. Several times a huge crowd surged towards tho head of the Queen's Wharf in- a menacing attitude. When the chairman, of the Harbour Board and tho wharfingor and his staff asked certain members of the union to get the men away from tho wharf they invariably managed to do so without much difficulty. On tho whole the strike is so far being conducted in as peaceful a manner as possible. There, were ono or two isolated instances of the men .putting up some opposition, but in the end tact won-,
