The Lord Chamberlain has warned tlio {Management that if public morality is further outraged the license for stflgo plays at the Palace Tlieatro will be cancelled. PRESS APPROVAL OF THE SKETCH. "Times"—Sydney "Sun" Special Cables. {Rec. October 23, 7.10 p.m.) London, October 23. Representatives of the London press witnessed tho performance of "A la Carte," and unanimously approved of it. 11l a recent article in the "Royal Magazine," Mdlle Gaby Ddlys addresses tho British public in the following strain:—"All'my life I have taken my profession with the utmost seriousness, atul yet when I was appearing in the part of Mile Chic in London not very long ago, a part which certainly did suggest frivolity of mind, I received lots of letters —I might almost- write tons of letters—from members of the audience, many of whom, judging by the spirit of their letters, seemed to be labouring under the curious impression that bccauso I happened to bo playing a frivolous part I must necessarily be of a frivolous disposition. Couid anything be moro absurd? Becauso an actor in melodrama happens to play tho part of a murderer, aro wo to suppose that in private life ho stealthily plunges a dagger into the ribs of his fellow countryman? Because an actress happens to be called upon 'to play, tho part of a thief, and steal the jewels of —shall wo say, her worst ener.vf —aro wo to suppose that when she leaves tho theatre, that actress makes a bobby of rummaging about in and extracting jewels from jewel-boxes which do not bolong to her? _ No, lio, mv friends in tho audience, it is not fair to think seriously that because an artist plays light parts that she must do so because prompted by inclination.
