Edgar Herapath, D.S.O. (retired) and his wife, of Engand. Major Herapath is tho son of the late Mr. Herapath, F.G.S., F.S.A F.S.S., formerly of Thaiiet,. England. He was educated at the* Kensington Grammar School, and oft the-Contra-ent. Hq entered the Army in 1875, re, , ceived his captain's commission in 1884, • was promoted to bo major eleven years later, and retired in 1901. His retiremcnt Was brought about by his having been severely wounded in the South r African War, during which campaign ; he was mentioned in dispatches, received the Queen's medal (with three | clasps), and won his D.S.O. He was ; attached to the Lincolnshire Regiment, ' and at ono period served for three years in the Ist West India Regiment. Mr. Hamilton's sympathies kid been very wide-and connected with all matters relating to art. This -combination of intercets, together with his Imtiring energy, had made him; an ideal Curator for the Dominion Museum. All must regret that his ideal of a DominionMuseum, building worthy of the collection,' whicJi owed bo much to his efforts had remained unrealised. It is _ interesting. to learn from an Australian correspondent that there wjis recently conferred upon Mr. Peter Jeffrey Mackie, of Glenreasdcll, Argyllshire, Scotland, the well-known "White Horse" distiller, the unique distinction of being made an honorary life member of the Highland' Society of New South Wale 3. This honour was bestowed at a special meeting of the members of the society, when Mr. Mackio was also presented with a. gold and enamel badge designed and executed in Sydney, "aa an evidence of the kindly feelings of a large and influential body of Scotß abroad towards ono of their country* men who has evinced a practical interest in their efforts to cultivate and foster a'love for tho literature, history, music, and sports of Scotland."
