ZOOLOGICAL SOCIETY.
$ rANNUAL MEETING. Tho animal meeting of tho Wellington Zoological Soeiety was held in the Town Hall last evening, tho president of the society, the Rev. J. Crowes, presiding. Apologies for absence wero received from the society's patron, Sir Robert Stout (Chief Justice) and Mr. A. E, Parker. Oil the motion of the president it was decided to place on record appreciation of the services rendered by tho lato Mr. A. Hamilton, in his position as Director of the Dominion Museum, and that a letter of sympathy be sent to his relatives. His Worship tho Mayor, who has joined the society as vice-patron, made a brief speech, in which he said that ho recognised that the Zoo was a valuable asset to the city and to the country. He thought, howover, that they should not havo too many animals placed in Newtown Park, as it was necessary to preserve the trees and walljs snd the. playing area. On the motion of the president, tho adoption of the annual report and bal-ance-sheet was agreed to. The election of officers for tho ensuing year resulted as follows: —Patron, His Honour Sir Robert Stout, K.C.M.G.; vice-patron, His Worship the Mayor, Mr. J. P. Luke; president, Mr. J. Crewes; vice-presidcnts, Messrs. D. M'Laren, C. J. Lockwood, E. Read, W. Jack, R. A. Wright; council, Mesdames J. Castle, J. Pollock, S. H, Underwood, Winter, Rev. J. Ward, Messrs. R. Brown, R. H." Chinchen, E. Collie, H. J. Crewes, G. Flux, M. G. Grenside, A. R. Hornblow, W, Martin, R. Morrish, J. Newhouse, H. A. Parkinson,. M.A., A. E. Parker, J. Pollock, S. H. Underwood, F. J. Caterer, A. Crosby, and T. Fathers; secretary and treasurer, Mr. J. Castle; auditor, Mr. R. H. Chinchen. It was decided to annually offer tho offico of vice-patron to the society to . the Mayor of the city, on condition that he continue to hold office until the annual meeting of the" society in each year. At,/this stage, Mr. H. A. Parkinson asked Mr. Crewes to accept a goldmouiited fountain pen, suitably inscribed. The present, he said, was from the young people of Wellington, who desired to show their appreciation of the president's newspaper articles and Zoo notes. Mr. Crewes, in accepting the gift, said that what writing lie had done on Zoo matters had been a labour of love, and he was gratified to find that it had been appreciated by the younger people. To move schools to use the Zoo for educational purposes, it was decided to hold another art competition this summer similar to the one held in the. winter months. It was decided to add to the collection by purchasing a pair of flying opossums, three diamond pheasants, a. male orango bishop weaver,' and a pair of ; Lincoln paralceets. Touching reference was _ made to tho , loss sustained by the president and the ■ society in the death of Mrs- Crowr-is. High appreciation was expressed of the services rendered by Dr. Chalmers Mitchell, of tho London Zoological So- - ciet-y, in tho strong appeal made by him for the preservation of tho World's fauna.
