Public interest in tho trial of the Jewish clerk Beiliss, on a charge of murdering the Christian boy Yusch- ' chinsky in April, 1912, centres in the * female witness, Vera Choberiak, who sits sphinx-like on the front bench, and is never at a loss for an answer. Krassovsky, a former Commissioner of Police, gave evidence fjhat ho was asked to investigate the murder. It ( was first reported that the murder had , been committed by a band of 'robbers. ! He was then asked to investigate tbo . possibility of a ritual murder. Ho fol--1 lowed many clues, which all pointed to Vera Cheberiak, wlioso boy, Eugeno Cheberiak, was friendly with Yushchinsky. Vera Cheberiak always told Krassovsky that Yushchinsky had been murdered either by his parents or as tho victim of a ritual crime. Krassovsky stated that, about this timo the "Black ' Hundred" agitation aroso against him, 1 and ho was dismissed at the end of 1911. But ho continued inquiring on his own ' account.
