At the Magistrate's Court Joe Cliong was fined £10 for smoking opium, and Chong Lee £5 for permitting opium smoking .on his premises. BIBLE IN SCHOOLS. Auckland, October 21. The Auckland Diocesan Synod of tho Anglican Church has passed a resolution requesting the Prime Minister to grant a referendum on tho Bible-in-•schools question; and setting apart De- ' cember 14 as Bible-in-schools Sunday. SHOP & HOUSE BURNT. ! Christchifrch, October 21. A butcher's shop and dwelling-house ■ at Riccarton, owned by Miss. Johnson, I of Lower Riccarton, and occupied by C. Houlton and family, was completely destroyed by firo at an early hour this ■ morning. The occupants escaped tvitli- 1 out accident, but wero only able to save a little of their household effects. The premises wero insured for £420 in tho Farmers' Co-operative Insurance Office, 1 and Mr. Houlton also bad his furniture ■ insured for £120 in tho South British ; Office. , i ONEHUNCA FIRE. < Auckland, October 21. ' A fire occurred at about 3 o'clock ; this morning in Onehmiga, in ii house i owned by Mr. Adam Jones, and occupied by Mr. Hopkinson, blacksmith. The occupant was not at home, having left throe days ago for New Plymouth. ' A neighbour was sleeping in the houLo with three of her own children, and two of Ilopkinson's, and they just man- ' aged to escapo_ from the burning build- J ing in their night attire. The house was badly damaged, and tho furniture j was destroyed. The house was in- | smed for £2.'!0, tho wash-house for £30, and the furniture for £100 in tho Roval Office.
