THE ENGAGEMENT OF SEAMEN. Two members of the Seamen's Union ifere; reported to have recently accepted . positions on a local ship through someone who Was jioi legally. authorised; to engage seamen. The union has taken the matter up, and, at a meeting this tveekj it was decided to ask the Marine Department to prosecute the agent engaging this labour. It ■ was. resolved that- in future any member of the union found accepting a berth from any son other tlmn an officer, superintendent, or owjier bo fined £5 and suspend* cd. until such fine is paid. The two men concerned in the case will bo called upon to appear before the i unionnext week. In the meantime the union will scud out circulars to all ships setting forth the penalty decided on {on - similar breaches of the rules.
