■ During tho past year, the first of its .. operations,' tho New Zealand Casein Company, whose factory is at Aramohd, exported to the Continent and England 250 tons of chsein. When it is- seen .that it" takes 8000 gallons of milk to make a ton of casein, the full scopo of the company's plant, is appreciated. After about two years of disappointing efforts' the freezing works at Whangar'ei Heads are to he put again into working order. TJio new company is R. and AA'. Fletcher, Ltd., London, a firm doing big business at Smithfield market and controlling 600 retail shops in Great Britain, ilr. A. Bevins, the Now Zealand manager for the company, has already visited the works. In conversation with a reporter Mr. lievins said tho company wanted all the assistance possible from the settlers in regard to the supply of stock. Tho works woiilcl bo,of immense benefit to the district. One of tho Shaw-Savill boats would arrive every four or six weeks. He expected to bo killing 500 head of •cattlo a day. If sufficient stock .was not available in the district cattlo would be bought elsewhere and shipped to tho works for killing. Necessary alterations are now.being carried out at tho works and improvements, made. London papers stato that the retailers of tho cheaper 'forms of margarino '-are Vorking oil a profit so small that au immediate increase 1 is said to be almost inevitable. Tho reason given is tli'o increase in tho prico of rawfmaterials used in the manufacture of margarine. "Up to a few years ago, ' sa.vs one authority, "there was plenty of animal fat for the trade. Then it began to get scarco, forcing tho manufacturers to experiment with vegetable fats, with moro or less success; JTow 4110X0 is so great a demand for. tho product that the prico of tlifc raw materials has iucreased enormously."
