ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.
Last night a labourer, named Sydney Hanson (42), single, of Upper Hutt, was admitted to the Hospital suffering from, fractured ribs, the result of an accident sustained during the morning. COAL GAS POISONING. (By iTelesrapli.—Prees Association.) Auckland, October 20. A young married man, named Ernest Curtis, was admitted to the Auckland Hospital on Saturday evening suffering from tho effects of coal gas poisoning. Shortly after 5 p.m. tho landlady of tho house at which Curtis and his wife were staying had occasion to go to the bedroom. As soon as she opened the door she was met by an overpowering smell of gas. The window and door of tho room had been closcd, thfe window blind was drawn, and the gas was escaping from two jets that were- turned full on. Curtis was lying on the bed in an -unconscious state., A doctor succeeded in the man to consciousness. Curtis said ho did not know how the gas came to be left oni. SUDDEN DEATH. John Settlor, 65 years of age, died suddenly early yesterday. He resided at 10 Mart'in Street.' An inquest will be held at 9 o'clock this morning. RUN-DOWN BY MOTOR. Auckland, October 20. Thomas C. Thorpe, one of a party of young men returning homo m Onehunga along the Mangero Road, was run down by a motor-car, and sustained two broken legs, a broken arm, a badlycut head, and other injuries. He was onnveyed to the Auckland Hospital, but died on tho journey. ' The car was occupied by a-man and two ladies. " SERIOUS STREET SMASH. Hastings, October 20. A serious motor accident occurred near the intersection of Karamu Road and Southampton Street this morning. A taxi-cab driven by Thomas Connelly was. endeavouring to avoid a collision with another car approaching at right angles, and crashed into a telegraph pole. The tnxi-cab was completely wrecked, aiid Connelly sustained serious internal injuries.
