CURRENT POLICE EFFORT.
THE CHINESE AGAIN. With tho object of lopping off some tentacles from what Inspector Hendry termed tho Chinese "octopus" at tho Magistrate's' Court yesterday, another raid was successfully carried out last night by Detective-Sergeant Cassells and Senior-Sergeant Dow\ who arrested a Chinese named Wong Joe, tlio keeper of a shop at the corner of Frederick and Taranaki Streets, along with three others named Bert Vince, Arthur Lamont, and Ernest Fish. The detective cycled past the scouts before they were aware of ITis intentions, i.nd forcing open the back door effected a capture. The four prisoners were taken off in a cab. along with a quantity of paraphernalia, to Mount Cook Police Station, v/ho-o they were brought before Mr. L. M'Kenzie, J.P., and remanded until this morning, when the}- will be formally charged at the Magistrate's Court. Tho three young prisoners were bailed out, but the Chinese remained in custody.
